Testimonials
"Lacrosse can be a very demanding sport with a jammed packed schedule. I had been pushing really hard to prepare for Worlds. Unfortunately I couldn't handle the loads that we were expected to do. I had never really been injured before like this so I was skeptical when I first start at Ludus. Looking back now I have no idea why I doubted these guys. They we're amazing throughout the whole rehab process and got me fully fit to play."
"Other physio’s in the past have just layed me down, given me a massage and some acupuncture and sent me on my way. The guys at Ludus put time into me and want to get the best out of me.
"When I first hurt my hamstring I was very angry and worried about the rest of my footy season. I message Ryan (S&C Coach) the next day and he booked an appointment in with Tom (Physio) straight away. They both reassured me that I'd be back playing in no time and wouldn't need to worry about missing too many games. Sure enough the boys got me back in 4 weeks and I didn't miss a game for the rest of the season."
FAQS
All About HAMSTRING INJURY
Hamstring re-injury rates are high due to a combination of biomechanical, neuromuscular, and rehabilitation-related factors. Here are the primary reasons:
- Insufficeint Rehab,
- Premature Return to Play
- Persistent Structural Deficits
- Inadequate Eccentric-Concentric Strength Ratios
- High-Speed Movement and Fatigue
- Underlying Risk Factors Not Addressed
- Lack of Long-Term Monitoring
Hamstring injury rates are increasing due to several factors tied to the evolution of modern sports, training demands, and biomechanical risks. Here are the key reasons driving this trend:
- Increased Game Speed and Intensity,
- Insufficient Eccentric Strength Training,
- High Volume of Games and Training (Overload),
- Early Specialization and Year-Round Sports,
- Suboptimal Rehabilitation and Return-to-Play (RTP) Decisions,
- Fatigue and Neuromuscular Control Deficits,
- Biomechanical Imbalances,
- Limited Recovery and Sleep,
- Lack of Long-Term Injury Prevention Programs.
Hamstring injury rates are rising due to the growing demands of modern sports, insufficient eccentric strength, biomechanical imbalances, fatigue, and rushed RTP decisions. To combat this trend, evidence-based solutions include:
- Implementing Eccentric Training: Nordic hamstring curls and isokinetic exercises.
- Using Load Management: Avoiding excessive workloads and overtraining.
- Focusing on Sprint Mechanics and Core Stability: Correct biomechanical flaws.
- Objective RTP Criteria: Strength, flexibility, and functional benchmarks before RTP.
- Monitoring Fatigue and Recovery: Improve recovery protocols and manage fatigue, particularly during late-game moments.
You have several effective rehabilitation options to recover from hamstring injuries, focusing on reducing pain, restoring strength and flexibility, and preventing re-injury. A well-structured rehab plan should be progressive, evidence-based, and tailored to the severity of the injury (Grade I, II, or III). By following a comprehensive, progressive rehab protocol that targets strength, flexibility, neuromuscular control, and mechanics, you can reduce recovery time and minimize the risk of re-injury.
While it is possible for athletes to return to running and sports without physiotherapy or strength training, this approach carries a higher risk of incomplete recovery and re-injury. Addressing the root causes of hamstring strain through strength, flexibility, and biomechanical correction is essential for sustainable performance and injury prevention. If avoiding formal interventions, athletes should at least incorporate basic self-care measures and gradual progression to improve their chances of success.
Athletes can identify a potential hamstring strain by recognizing specific symptoms and testing their hamstring's function. Here are the key signs and diagnostic indicators:
1. Common Symptoms of a Hamstring Strain
Sudden, Sharp Pain: Often felt in the back of the thigh during sprinting, kicking, or explosive movement.
Tenderness and Soreness: Pain when touching or pressing the injured area, particularly near the muscle belly or tendon.
Swelling or Bruising: May develop within hours, especially in moderate to severe strains.
Muscle Weakness: Difficulty contracting the hamstring or performing actions like bending the knee or extending the hip.
Reduced Range of Motion (ROM): Tightness and difficulty fully extending the leg due to pain or stiffness.
"Popping" Sensation: Athletes with a Grade II or III strain may feel or hear a "pop" at the moment of injury.
2. Grading the Severity (Grade I, II, or III)
Grade I (Mild):
Minor discomfort, slight tightness, and minimal swelling.
Pain may only occur during sprinting, running, or when stretching the hamstrings.
No significant loss of strength or function.
Grade II (Moderate):
Sharp pain with noticeable swelling, tenderness, and possible bruising.
Difficulty walking or performing everyday activities that involve knee flexion or hip extension.
Moderate muscle weakness and reduced ROM.
Grade III (Severe):
Severe pain, often accompanied by a "tearing" or "popping" sensation.
Visible swelling and extensive bruising.
Significant weakness and loss of function; athletes may struggle to walk or bear weight.
Complete rupture may cause a palpable gap in the muscle.
3. Functional Self-Tests
While athletes should seek professional evaluation if they suspect a hamstring strain, they can perform the following self-assessments to gauge the injury:
Isometric Hamstring Contraction Test:
Lie on your stomach and attempt to bend your knee against light resistance (e.g., pushing against your hand). Pain or weakness suggests a possible strain.
Active Straight Leg Raise (SLR):
While lying on your back, lift your injured leg straight up. Pain or limited mobility could indicate a strain.
Single-Leg Bridge Test:
Lie on your back, lift one leg, and perform a bridge with the injured leg. Difficulty maintaining the bridge or pain in the hamstrings may signal injury.
4. When to Seek Medical Attention
Athletes should consult a healthcare professional (e.g., sports physiotherapist or orthopedic doctor) if they experience:
Severe pain, swelling, or bruising.
Inability to bear weight on the injured leg.
Suspected Grade II or III strain (significant weakness or loss of function).
Recurring hamstring injuries, which may indicate underlying biomechanical issues.
Diagnosis by Professionals
A healthcare professional may perform additional tests, such as:
Palpation and ROM Tests: To assess tenderness, muscle tightness, and functional deficits.
Ultrasound or MRI: For a detailed assessment of the muscle and to confirm the severity of the injury (especially for Grade III strains).
Bottom Line: Athletes can detect a hamstring strain based on pain, weakness, swelling, reduced ROM, and functional deficits. Early identification, combined with rest and appropriate rehab, is crucial to prevent further damage and ensure effective recovery.
The healing time for hamstring strains depends on the severity of the condition, the athlete's adherence to treatment, and the steps taken to address underlying causes. On average, it can take anywhere between 3 to 12 weeks for most athletes to recover sufficiently to return to sport.

Our hamstring Rehab Program
The traditional approach for hamstring rehab revolves around session-to-session care; where you pay for a single consult, get advice, and return at agreed-upon intervals with your practitioner. Typically, the sessional approach does not support you with training and advice outside the consult, meaning you spend more time by yourself. Our approach turns that idea on its head — rather than paying each time you see us, you pay one fixed weekly cost, and you can see us as often as you'd like (some athletes are at our facility 5x per week!). This approach means that you get all the support you need, whenever you need it. This results in great hamstring rehab outcomes for our athletes and better support along the way.
We'll support you for the length of your hamstring rehab and even past your return to sport date if you want us too!
Our hamstring rehab program includes everything you need to return to sport with confidence:
Unlimited physiotherapy support and care
Unlimited coaching across 25 hours a week on the gym floor
Weekly, individualised programming
Your own running coach to help you get back on the pitch or court
Unlimited access to recovery services, like GameReady, NormaTec compression boots, and our icebaths and sauna
All your staged exit testing using our sports science technology
Mental skills support to help you rebuild your confidence
Nutrition support to help you stay in shape and recover faster
And most importantly, a great community of other like minded athletes
In some cases, we do look after athletes remotely. If you live interstate or can’t make it to the facility, please reach out to us and we’ll assess if we can help. Most of the time, we’ll refer you to a coach we recommend in your city, because nothing beats coaching and accountability in the flesh. However, if you really want to work with us, we can explore that option with you, utilising telehealth, video coaching, and other remote technologies.
PRICING
We value transparency in pricing. We have a simple price structure -- pay $167 per week, and get everything you need (see our full inclusions above).
Yes. When you prepay for the term, you’ll receive an additional 10% off our advertised weekly price.
We totally understand. Ryan worked at big commercial gyms and understands how a lot of trust has been lost with gyms and direct debit (DD) memberships. If you don’t feel comfortable setting up a DD with us, prepaying for your hamstring rehab is still an option.
